9x12 Area Rugs
A 9x12 rug is a large rug — nine feet by twelve — sized to anchor a big living room, a generous dining room, or an open-plan space where a smaller rug would leave the furniture floating. This collection gathers every 9x12 we make, across materials: hand-bound natural sisal, genuine cowhide patchwork, and easy-care woven area rugs. It is the size to reach for when you want the whole seating group to sit on the rug. Free US shipping and 30-day returns on in-stock rugs.

The 9x12 Size, Explained
Is a 9x12 Rug Right for Your Room?
Nine by twelve feet is a large rug — 108 square feet — and it earns its place in a big room. As a guide, a 9x12 suits a living room of roughly 13x16 feet or larger, where it can sit under the full seating group, and a dining room that seats eight, where it keeps every chair on the rug when pulled out. In an open-plan space it defines the seating zone without crowding the walkways. Measure your room and your furniture footprint first: you want roughly 12 to 18 inches of floor showing between the rug and the walls.
What Comes in 9x12
Natural sisal
Hand-bound in the USA and made to order, sisal in 9x12 gives a large room a warm, textural, natural-fiber base. Choose your border color and weave. Keep sisal to dry indoor rooms, as the plant fiber is moisture-sensitive. Browse the full range in USA-made sisal rugs.
Genuine cowhide patchwork
Genuine hair-on-hide, hand-stitched into geometric patterns, cowhide patchwork in 9x12 anchors a living room with real texture and one-of-a-kind character, and resists spills in a busy space.
Easy-care woven rugs
For a family room, a machine-woven 9x12 offers a wide range of patterns and colors at an easier price, and cleans up simply. Each product page lists the material and care.
How to Place a 9x12 Rug
- Living room, all legs on: a 9x12 is large enough to sit under every leg of the sofa and chairs for a grounded, considered look.
- Dining room for eight: centered under the table, a 9x12 keeps all chairs on the rug when pulled out.
- Open-plan: use it to zone the seating area distinctly from the dining or walkway.
- Great room: in a very large space, a 9x12 can define one of several zones rather than the whole floor.
