About this rug
A natural fiber sisal area rug in Bone boucle, hand-bound with an alabaster cotton border. Woven from 100% natural sisal and finished by hand, this is a sisal rug with border built to bring warm, tactile texture to the rooms you actually live in — the kind of rug you buy once and keep for years.
The weave and the make. This is our classic Boucle weave — a small, tight boucle loop that is long-wearing, easy to live with, and endlessly versatile. Every Poshrug sisal rug is woven from renewable, plant-based sisal fiber, backed with an anti-skid backing to keep it flat and stable, hand-bound with your chosen border, and made to order in the USA. Because it is a natural plant fiber, subtle variation in tone and texture is part of its character — no two rugs are exactly alike, so yours is genuinely one of a kind.
How it feels underfoot. Sisal is a firm, textured fiber, not a soft one — that is the trade-off that makes it hard-wearing. The Boucle weave is a small, tight loop, so it reads smooth and even underfoot rather than knobbly. It is at its best in living rooms, hallways, entryways, dining rooms and home offices. If what you want is something plush to stand on barefoot first thing in the morning, a wool rug will make you happier, and we would rather say so now than after it arrives.
Naturally sustainable. Sisal comes from the agave plant, grown on local farms in Mexico — a fast-renewing, eco-friendly natural fiber from a crop that regrows on a short cycle. It is naturally anti-static and hard-wearing, which is part of why the sisal rug has been a designer and trade favorite for decades. The low pile and tight weave also mean there is little for dust to settle into.
Built for real rooms. Sisal is one of the most durable natural fiber floor coverings there is — high tensile strength, resistant to abrasion, and made for high-traffic spaces. The honest summary is that it is mechanically very tough, and it is spills rather than footfall that shorten its life. The Bone color reads calm and neutral, so it grounds a space without competing with your furniture.
Where it works, and where it does not. Sisal is hygroscopic — it takes up and releases moisture from the air, and changes dimension slightly as it does. Keep it in dry, conditioned indoor space, roughly 65 to 95°F with relative humidity at or below 65%. That rules out bathrooms, the area around a kitchen sink, damp basements, uncovered porches and anywhere it can be rained on. It is fine over underfloor heating.
Do you need a rug pad? No. The natural latex backing is there to keep the rug flat and stable on its own, and for most floors that is all you need. One thing worth knowing if you have hardwood: latex backings can react over time with certain floor finishes and cleaning products. If your floors are a concern, or you simply want more cushion underfoot, email us and we will point you to a pad that suits.
Pets. Sisal takes pet traffic well, because the weave is tight and the fiber is tough. Two honest caveats. Accidents are liquid, and liquid is sisal's weak point, so a house with a puppy still in training is a house where a sisal rug will show its history. And cats are genuinely drawn to sisal for scratching, which is exactly why scratching posts are wrapped in it. Some owners use that deliberately to pull claws away from the sofa. Others would rather know first.
Shedding, sprouting and sunlight. Every plant fiber sheds a little, and sisal sheds noticeably less than jute. A new rug releases loose fiber left over from weaving, which settles down with regular vacuuming. You may also see the occasional short fiber stand up out of the weave — a sprout. Do not pull it; clip it flush with the top of the pile using sharp scissors. Direct sun will lighten sisal over time, but it fades evenly, closer to the mellowing of unfinished wood than to a patch. Rotate the rug occasionally and it will age uniformly.
Styling. The border gives you an alabaster cotton border — a soft, tone-on-tone edge for a barely-there border. Layer this natural fiber area rug under a sofa or bed as a foundation, define an entryway or hallway, or let the texture stand on its own. It sits comfortably in coastal, modern, farmhouse, and traditional interiors alike.
Sizing and custom orders. Available in popular sizes — 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, and up to 12x15 — plus fully custom dimensions cut to your exact space. Before you order, mark the dimensions on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the fastest way to see how much space a size really covers and whether it works with your furniture. As a rule of thumb, a living-room rug should sit under at least the front legs of your seating; in a dining room, allow room for chairs to slide back while staying on the rug; in a bedroom, let it extend beyond the sides of the bed.
Care and spills. Sisal is a dry-use fiber, so speed matters more than technique. Blot a spill immediately with a clean, dry, undyed cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward so you do not spread it, and never rub. Lift off any solids first. Do not saturate, steam or wet-shampoo the rug: sisal absorbs water readily, and soaking it can bleed the fiber's natural color, weaken it, and shrink it unevenly. For a deeper clean use a dry-extraction powder system such as Host or Capture, or a cleaner who works with natural fiber. Treat spills the moment they happen — a stain left to set may not come out completely, even professionally.
Not sure? Order samples first. This rug is made for you after you order, so we would much rather you saw the color and the border in your own light before we start. Sisal is textural, and both the rug and the border read differently on a floor than on a screen. Email sales@poshrug.com and we will send samples. Live with them for a few days. It is the cheapest way to be certain.
Returns. You can change or cancel free of charge within 48 hours of ordering, before your rug goes into production. After delivery you have 30 days to return it: we arrange and pay the return freight, and refund you less a 30% restocking fee. The rug must come back unused and in its original packing material, so keep the packaging until you are sure. Because every rug is made to order, please use the samples.
